[globalsouthdata] Workshop invitation - Standards and Norms at IEEE

Dear all

In the next months, we will organize a series of workshops about the
engagement of digital rights activists of the Global South in institutional
spaces and organizations that are discussing policies and technical
standards that will impact the future of datafication and democracy.

These workshops are safe spaces for conversations and collective thinking.
We believe that we can work better when we share our forces and map new
opportunities together. We do not expect a closed meeting of experts, but a
space in which we can all learn and open our eyes to new forms of activism.

This first workshop will be focused on standards and norms created by the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a professional
association for electronic engineering and electrical engineering founded
in 1963. More specifically, we will talk about the IEEE Robotics and
Automation Society, founded in 1987, which is interested in both applied
and theoretical issues in robotics and automation.* The event will take
place on September 27th, at 10:00 a.m GMT-3.*

In the workshop, we will hear from Prof. Edson Prestes
<https://www.inf.ufrgs.br/~prestes/site/Welcome.html>, who is an IEEE
Senior Member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society(IEEE RAS) and
IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA).

He will present for 40 minutes and then we will have 30 minutes for
discussions about the intersection of human rights with the standardization
process at IEEE. We will also have some minutes to talk about forms of
engagement and how to participate in IEEE's activities.
