The *Global South Alliance* wil host its next open meeting on October 22,
2024, where grantees from the first cohort of the Datafication and
Democracy Fund (DDF)

will present their impactful research. The grantees are Like a Palm Tree
(Africa), Center of Security and Citizenship Studies (LatAm), Corporación
Cambio Sostenible (LatAm), Criminal Justice and Policy Accountability
Project (Asia), and Ikigai Innovation Initiative (Africa).
Formed in early 2023 through collaborative efforts between Paradigm
Initiative, Aapti Institute, and Data Privacy Brasil, the Global South
Alliance seeks to unify NGOs dedicated to promoting mutual learning and
advancing digital rights from a Global South perspective. In addition to
the three organizations, ten others from Asia, Africa, and Latin America,
including Asociación por los Derechos Civiles, Bolo Bhi, Center for
Communication Governance, CIPESA, Derechos Digitales, Digital Rights
Foundation, Internet Bolívia, KICTANET, Pollicy, and Research ICT Africa,
are members of the Alliance.
Every quarter, the Alliance *convenes open meetings* that welcome all
stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions. The next session is
scheduled for 22nd October 2024. In this 1.5-hour meeting, grantees of the
2024 Datafication and Democracy Fund—representing five organizations from
Africa, Latin America, and Asia
<https://www.dataprivacybr.org/datafication-and-democracy-fund-welcomes-five-organizations-from-the-global-south-for-short-term-projects/>—will
share their research findings on several critical issues:
- Faces and Rights: An Analysis of Biometric Datafication in Migration
Regularization
- Sports, Data, and Rights: The Use of Facial Recognition in Brazilian
Stadiums
- Connecting Contemporary Datafication Practices to the Casteist and
Colonial History of Biometric Datafication in 19th and 20th Century India
- Bridging Data Governance Gaps in Africa’s Electioneering Processes: A
Case of Kenya and Nigeria
- Rethinking the Framework for Child Online Protection in Nigeria (and
the Global South)
In addition, we will discuss what to expect from the second phase of the
Datafication and Democracy Fund in 2025.
The Datafication and Democracy Fund was launched this year to support
organizations addressing challenges at the intersection of datafication and
democracy in the #GlobalSouth. This session will feature vital insights
from organizations across Africa, Latin America, and Asia, tackling issues
like biometric datafication, data governance in elections, and child online
protection.
